You Feel Me?
music by J. R. Rothrock 2026
“You Feel Me?” is an instrumental journey into the heart and mind of a soldier marching toward a battle he may not survive.
The piece begins softly and slowly, almost from a distance. The steady beat of the drums gradually emerges, marking the footsteps of an army moving across the open countryside. Somewhere beyond them, the sounds of battle can already be heard--faint at first, but close enough to remind every man in the column what lies ahead.
As the music builds, the grandeur of the army and the fear of the individual begin to exist side by side. Beneath the armor, the banners, the swords and the causes men were told to fight for was simply a human being--afraid, uncertain, and painfully aware of his own mortality.
The face of the crusader in the artwork is meant to bridge the centuries. Look into his eyes and, for a moment, forget that he lived hundreds of years ago. Imagine hearing those drums. Imagine walking toward the smoke and confusion knowing there may be no road home.
Fear hasn’t changed very much over the centuries.
Neither has courage.
“You Feel Me” asks no questions and offers no answers. It simply looks across the distance of time and says:
You feel me?
