A Lonely Silhouette
Art & Lyrics
I wanted to write a “Marshall Tucker-type song”, so I put on my cowboy hat and hopped on my horse [ball cap, lazy boy chair] and started dreaming and scribbling. An hour later, I moseyed up to the nearest saloon [my refrigerator] and told the bartender to hit me with a shot of red eye and some chewin' tobaccy [get-it-yourself milk and cookies]. Next thing I know, there was a terrible racket as my horse busted loose outside the saloon [I tripped over the kitchen chair and broke my pinkie toe]. So, pardner, this truly is authentic cowboy music! Much obliged for you comin' by. (Tumbleweed rolls by, owl hoots in the distance) [I kicked one of the grand kids' toys across the room and wife yells from the other room to "hold it down" : ) ] I don't think it's possible to be a male of my age, have a passion for music, have spent more than half his life living in the South, and not be influenced by the music of groups like The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, ZZTop, etc. It is a rite of passage and a part of our DNA. Am I a cowboy at heart? Maybe... from time to time... but not a real cowboy. But just like any run-of-the-mill suburban dude, cowboys fall in love from time to time. But alas, they are much better with horses and cows than with women, so there is a lot that can go wrong. Who cares?! Let's ride!!! A Lonely Silhouette words & music JRRothrock 2/4/2011 Out there’s a lonely silhouette... ... blowin’ down a dusty trail. Slippin’ slowly through the darkness... ... to the sad coyotes’ wail. You may think you know his story... and, I guess, it ain’t nothin’ new… ... but it sure gives the knife an extra twist... when you’re the one it happens to. From a small town east of Dallas... there’s a bad wind blowin’ round. Before you embrace the rumors... here’s the deal on what went down… ... ‘bout the hurt a young girl can do ya... even when you’re not around… … that leaves you lost, without a home... and only one way out of town. I was once a proud and happy man... with the prettiest girl in town. When she whispered that she loved me, wow! There was no sweeter sound. We had a special “magic”. Something everybody saw. “Aw, don’t they look sweet together?” A love affair without a flaw! Oh, but the weather soon got ugly... and winter ice blew into town… … and now she’s lit another’s fire... and I’m alone and broken down!!! So, I’m drifting through the darkness... with the sweet smell of the loam. I reckon I’ll ride on forever... until I find another home… ********************* You dream you’ll find that special one... you’d take proudly as your wife. You love this girl with all your heart... and you would lay down your life. Now I gotta keep on ridin’... just to leave the past behind! I'm a man but a hurt like this... can surely rearrange your mind! Oh, no no!!! ********************** One day you fall upon one knee... to pose the question of your life. And you search deeply within her eyes... and ask her to be your wife. So, how could it be I’m ridin’... to put more miles in between… … the hurt that almost took my life... and tore apart my dreams? So, it’s me, my horse, and saddlebags... and just enough to get me by… … as I travel by the moonlight... so no one can see me cry. The song is silent in my heart... and I’m just blowin’ in the wind… … prayin’ for some sweet tomorrow... when I might feel love again! Until that time, I’ll drift along... unseen by the night… and dream about better days... as I keep ridin’ toward the light. And when I wish upon the stars... ... it's for someone to hold me tight… and love me ‘till forever... and that it ALL will turn out right!
