From the recording Crossing The Double-Line
Music, like anything else in life, comes in many flavors. Styles, tempos, beats, backing instruments, and other elements all contribute to creating a mood. Sometimes, as a musician, you can get so into a groove or a rhythm that you find yourself in a zone where you don’t even think… the music simply flows from you as if from some other source. Sometimes what comes out of you is so other-worldly that it kind of freaks you out for a second, but in a good way. A more experienced musician can probably drift in and out of this zone smoothly, but sometimes you lose control and hit the wall…or, in this case… You find yourself crossing the double line!
I heard this in my head one night and had to get up and make a rough recording so that I wouldn't lose the moment. I usually keep a voice recorder next to my bed. Some of my best ideas, not just musically, have come to me while I'm in a horizontal position. I've been fortunate to have reached this stage in life and have become increasingly aware of its fragility. We are forever reminding our daughter that life can change in an instant, and not necessarily due to an error on your part. You can be grooving along when life's left hook catches you on the chin. Life is about participation, but you must be aware in all directions. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Let's ride this train as far as it goes! Cheers!
