From the recording The Lucky One
We live in an age of assumed entitlement. We believe we deserve the same luxury accoutrements or privileges that we see our neighbors enjoying, regardless of our talents, abilities, and efforts. Many are living lifestyles beyond their means. The financial holes that are being dug may never be filled. There is a whole generation growing up that is in danger of becoming very unhappy adults if they remain unable to differentiate between their needs and their wants.
Regardless of who you are or where you come from, all you need to do is open your eyes to see people who are living each day merely trying to get to tomorrow. With the barest minimums, they are struggling day-to-day for hand-to-mouth survival. With the pace of today’s world, coupled with the general frustration levels of a never-satisfied society, along with the willingness of people to blame their shortcomings on others, it is not surprising that there is general intolerance for others and short fuses everywhere. The solution? Take your foot off the gas of your bulldozer for a few minutes, listen to this song, and imagine what each of us could do if we approached life a little differently. After all, you are the lucky one!
Lyrics
The Lucky One words & music JRRothrock
In another place and time… there could be another face like mine…
…but for lack of opportunity… and simple fate, it could be you or me.
Worthy of, but merely due to chance… never earned, but just by happenstance.
Have you succeeded by your own device? Or were you rewarded by a roll of dice?
Did you ever think that just perhaps… it could be you who had to live for scraps?
…not because you didn’t do what’s right. You’re simply not in “fortune’s” line of sight.
Please take a moment, let me share with you… I wonder if I may compare with you…
…some human measure and perspective lost. Life’s in the balance, are our wires crossed?
He thinks his morning blew up in his face… because someone took his parking place!
He’s the lucky one!
She thinks her day is such a mess… ‘cause she can’t find the shoes to match her dress!
She’s the lucky one!
He’s got the waitress on the run… simply cause his steak was overdone!
He’s the lucky one!
You’re on the freeway in your brand-new car… bumper-to-bumper so you can’t get far!
Who’s the lucky one?
You tell the world your day was horrible… but your glass is almost always full…
You’re the lucky one!
A little boy has yet to learn… tonight his soldier daddy won’t return…
Who’s the lucky one?
A broken mother cries herself to sleep. Her only son is lying in the street!
Who’s the lucky one?
A young girl is forced to walk the streets… to help her family scrape a bite to eat.
Who’s the lucky one?
Somewhere, a frightened family pays their “tolls” looking at the world through bullet holes.
Who’s the lucky one?
As you go floating gently through your dreams… somewhere the nightmare never ends,
it seems.
You’re the lucky one!
In another place and time… I know their misery could all be mine…
I’m the lucky one!
