Contemplating Bigger Things

Contemplating Bigger Things begins quietly, almost as if a single thought has just entered your mind. Small and reflective at first, the music leaves room for stillness-the kind that comes when we stop looking at everything immediately around us and begin considering something much greater.
Gradually, the music expands. Layers of synthesizers widen the horizon as one thought leads to another, until the powerful brass rises and the piece becomes large and sweeping-as though the immensity of creation itself has suddenly come into view.
There is something wonderfully humbling about realizing just how small we are beneath an endless sky, surrounded by the enormity of God’s creation. But small doesn’t mean insignificant. Quite the opposite. We can be tiny in the vastness of creation and still be known by the One who created it.
And there is freedom in that realization. I don’t have to understand everything. I don’t have to control everything. And perhaps most importantly, I don’t have to carry everything. Some things are simply bigger than I am-and that is okay.
The lone cowboy sitting high above the desert isn’t overwhelmed by the enormous sky before him. He seems almost resting beneath it, quietly recognizing God’s creation, His wisdom, and His purposes extend far beyond anything he could ever see or comprehend.
Sometimes realizing how small we are doesn’t diminish us.
Sometimes it takes the weight off our shoulders.
And gives us freedom to simply sit quietly… and contemplate bigger things.
