Let me preface this explanation by saying that I have been on both sides of this proverbial coin. I have a teenage daughter. She is a very pretty young lady. Like most young ladies her age, she likes boys and dates, or “hangs out” as she calls it. Occasionally, she has focused on one specific boy for a period, which has its good and bad points. Like most fathers, and much to my daughter’s dismay, I am tremendously protective. She is priceless and cannot be replaced. I try very hard to like the boys that show up at the house, but that is easier said than done. You see, it was not that long ago that I was one of “them”! I know the three or four things that guys her age (and for many years to come) think about constantly. Half of these subjects are not good. Therefore, I look at these young men with great scrutiny and pray for discernment. I can remember very early on in my “dating career”, that the father of a young lady that I cared about couldn’t even get my name right! So, for this particular girl, I was content with being “Jack” …a small price to pay to spend some time with a quality person (who was also another man's priceless daughter). Was it a mistake… or a way to say, “Okay, Buddy, hear this! I’ve got my eye on you, and if I find even one hair on my daughter out of line, I will hunt you down and squash you like a bug!”? Over the years, although I had nothing to hide and was always the gentleman that I was raised to be, I always imagined a shotgun being cocked and ready to fire whenever I met the father of a young lady that I was fortunate enough to spend some time with…and NOW I get it! That said, this song is for those on the side of the coin who can still hear this imaginary shotgun!

    Lyrics

RUNNING WITH THE MOON JRRothrock c 12/31/2004

There comes a time in every life, and I’m under no delusions,
Gone over it a thousand times… and reached the same conclusion.
    Tonight’s the night I’ve circled… and I’m about to double-down.
I’ll scrape up my belongings… and "bullet" out of town.

Will you be the inspiration ...
... for this life that I have planned?
    I know, you’ve always been a “Daddy’s girl”…
Well, it’s time you changed your “man”!

My palms are damp and sweaty...
    ... and my body shakes a chill…
... as I walk my Harley through the night…
... to your house up on (big house)… up on the hill

They told me, “Don’t’ mess with her 'Daddy'...
... ‘cause he’s the baddest man around.
Just by pickin’ up the phone…
... he can put you in the ground!"

But, hey, I can not do “it” his way…
... and he won’t consider mine.
So now that dance is over…
… and it’s time to lay it on the line!
    *********************************************
So here I stand, outside your door…
    … ready, willing and able…
... to ante up. My chips are down.
The cards are on the table.
    Pebbles at your window pane.
    Curtain pulls aside.
    Screen door flies open…
... as you slide on from behind…
    *********************************************
I’m so sorry about your Daddy, Babe…
... but we just couldn’t get in tune.
I’m through dancing to his puppet strings…
… so we’re running with the moon!!!
    *********************************************
    To her father:
We don’t want your dirty money...
... and soon it will be known…
… I can provide a life for us.
We’re gonna make it on our own!

Man, this could’ve been so easy…
... but when you slammed the door…
... you left me no alternative.
Can you hear my Harley roar?!!!

You wouldn’t listen to my music…
…and you laughed at my ambition…
... so, when you hear my songs on the radio,
    ...you can “shove” your intuition!

I had to do it my way…
and I cannot make it clearer…
... that when I get to be your age…
... I wanna like who’s in the mirror!
    *********************************************
    So, please pardon my demeanor...
... you may have all that money buys.
The rich man’s world is "greener"…
    ... but the poor man…
    …this time… gets the Prize!

    …I love you… …I love you… …I love you!
    … Angel Eyes!

    Welcome!
