Most likely, "the one that got away" probably "got away" for a reason. They probably were not a good fit for you, at least not at that particular moment in your life. You have to trust that often things happen for a reason and more often than not, they "happen" for your own "good". If someone left you in the dust, count your blessings because that likely means that they did not care for you at a level that would sustain a lasting relationship. Duh. I guess this is not rocket science but I was stung badly once and the pain lingered for many years. I believe that wound was a building block in the foundation of the person that I am today. I also believe that we do learn from our mistakes. Granted, some of us learn more quickly than others. I have made many mistakes in my life, but I do not have many regrets other than the hurt that I have put on others... and I humbly ask for forgiveness. This song was written for someone at that fork in the road in a relationship. The twist is that you have no control over which branch of the fork to take. There are always two people in control of the direction of their relationship. When paths diverge, relationships dissolve. That said, I have also witnessed ended relationships where paths converge again later in life.

This song makes me a bit sad on another level. I lost the original multi-track recording of this song. I inadvertently deleted the entire song as I was recording it. I was building the foundation of the song which is usually drums and bass guitar. That gives you a skeleton for the song on which you can begin to lay muscle, etc. The idea was really beginning to take shape and I absolutely love where this was going. The jazzy feel was coming on and I was inspired. Sometimes musical ideas come at you faster than you can physically get them recorded. As you are playing, you are always thinking at least one step ahead so you know where the song path winds and bends. If you are playing more complex, intricate parts, sometimes you get tripped up between where you are in the instant, and where you want to take the song next. When this happens, sometimes you get tripped up in the moment. When you are a one-man band, there is no external pressure, only creative freedom to experiment. If you trip up, you keep playing because you can always go back later and fix the part that you didn't like or even improve upon the idea of the instant. When you completely lose the digital multi-track recording, which gives you access to the individual guitar track (or whatever), and all you have is a stereo (2-track) mixdown of the entire song, there is no way to go back and extract the part you want to fix. Again, I have learned some hard lessons about saving my work as I go. Here in Florida where lightning and power failures are frequent, backing up your work is a critical step in avoiding the loss of something that you could never recreate... being "in the pocket" during a moment of inspiration.

    Lyrics

Slippin’ Out Of Darkness words & music C 1999 by Jeffry R. Rothrock

I’m slippin’ out of darkness… hoping only for your eyes to see…
that the man who stands before you… Oh, Babe, is here to set you free!

Ya’ got hooked on a decision… where you took another path.
But, you know, your “one and one” means nothin’!
Why don’t you just let me teach you some math?

Got no “subtracting” or “dividing”… “Multiplication"s where it’s at!
You got “parole” for curiosity, ‘cause, you know, it was boredom killed the cat!

    We need—to share… our love—tonight
    Linger—with me... till morn—ing light,..
    What you—will find... you've al—ways known.
That this—is true... my heart—you own!

    …think about it…

To have these kinds of feelings… oh, Baby, seems so strange to me.
I would need no more “wheeler-dealing”… ‘cause HOME is where my heart would be!
‘and yet, it seems that you could never… look very deeply in my eyes.
Are you afraid of what you’ll find there?
…a true love that never dies!

We need—to share… ...our love tonight
    Linger—with me... ...till morning light,..
What you—will find... ...you've always known...
...that this—is true... ...my heart, you own!

    …think about it, Baby… ... a little harder now…
    ______________________________________________________________________________

No, I can’t tell the future… and, Lord knows that I’ve got no crystal ball!
…but if you listen to your heart, Girl... then, you will surely hear it all!

I’m saying, all you need is lovin’… and don’t you worry ‘bout the rest!
Just give me your lovey-dovin’... Grrrr... and, Baby, I’ll give you the best!!!

If not? I’ll slip back into darkness… ‘cause it just wasn’t meant to be…
Hey! Someday I will find the “rainbow”… but I KNOW, you were THE ONE for me!!!

    …bye…bye…

    Welcome!
